We have been enjoying a summer full of visitors and great eats. Aunt Slynn stopped by for a few weeks and the adventures were never ending. A trip to Seattle wouldn't be complete without a stop to Pike Place Market, a coffee in hand, and a visit to Rachel the pig!

Dinner During Lent - Ash Wednesday - Pierogies and Asparagus
It's Ash Wednesday, or a Friday in Lent, what's for dinner?
Immediately I imagine my Mom's Tuna Noodle Casserole! A close second is, of course, a fish sandwich. I'm trying to get creative this year with a different meat-free meal each week and calling the project Dinner During Lent.

On Ash Wednesday we kept it very simple. We had pierogies with corn and shallots + roasted asparagus.

Pittsburgh Christmas 2013
There's really nothing like going to your home at Christmas-time! This trip back to Pittsburgh was the longest and best in years. I'd never been to the famous Pamela's Diner in the Strip District and I have finally marked it off of my list!

These girls and I have known each other since elementary school and we had a great coffee date with a side of breakfast food! Diana, Megan, Mallory and I tried a little bit of everything, strawberry stuffed pancakes, omelets with extra cheese, and Pamela's renowned lyonnaise potatoes.

My 22nd Birthday
In addition to the nostalgia these photos stir up, there are 2 other major things they bring to mind:
- About a month after this birthday I decided I'd move to Hawaii! If my current (2011) self could jump into this picture and tell me then "Hey Ang, your 22nd year will be one of the very best of your life. You'll move to Hawaii, land your first REAL job, meet a fantastic guy, and successfuly make the transition to surviving on your own, all before you turn 23!" there's no way I would have believed my older and wiser self! Doesn't life always seem to be more interesting and unpredictable than you ever imagined?
- Dear Old (Penn) State will never be the same as it was back then. The uncovering of the scandal and following events that have occurred in recent weeks have shaken up the University, its leadership, students, athletics, and alumni. I am so sickened by what that MONSTER did to those poor children. They will continue to be in my thoughts and Prayers. As for everyone else involved, including JoePa (who I LOVE), if they did anything that allowed Sandusky to continue on his path of destruction I believe they should be held accountable. I wish the authorities had given a little more consideration to firing JoePa the way they did but I'm
surehoping they're doing what's right. This whole thing has consumed my life for the past 2 weeks and I'm emotionally drained from it all. It's incredible how one person has ruined so many lives. Oh - did I forget to say allegedly? Sorry, I hope he gets what he deserves - either in prison or after he passes through the LARGER gates.
Here I'm demonstrating my EVOO dispenser's usefulness. "When you come home from the bars at 2 am, do this before you put the pierogies in the pan!"

Pierogies N'at
Pierogies are a big deal in Pittsburgh.
My trusty friend Wikipedia says: "The origins of pierogi are difficult to trace".
I say: They're from Poland, brought to Pittsburgh's "Polish Hill", and the 2 have been in love ever since.
What are they?
Wikipedia says: Half circular dumplings of unleavened dough, stuffed with mashed potatoes, cheese, cabbage, sauerkraut, meat, mushrooms, spinach, or other ingredients.
I say: It's like a ravioli, but instead of ricotta cheese inside there's mashed potatoes, and sometimes other goodness like cheese - I don't eat any of that other crap! :)
So when I moved from Pennsylvania to Hawaii I discovered that you can buy frozen, pre-made, Mrs. T's Pierogies here! Instead of a whole freezer case dedicated to them, you have to hunt for them and usually can only find 1 variety, but that's ok as long as I can have them every once and a while. Bryce had never heard of or eaten pierogies before and I've since gotten him hooked on them, too! We eat them on a regular basis.
If you're familiar with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the worst baseball team in the league, you'll know that there's a "Great Pierogi Race, N'at" at all of the games! My BFF Jamie actually got to be in the race when she worked for the Pirates (She was Saul and she didn't win, boo!).
Here what Wikipedia says about it: The Great Pittsburgh Pierogy Race N'at, commonly called the Great Pierogi Race, is an American promotion between innings during a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game that features four contestants racing in giant pierogies costumes: JalapeƱo Hannah (green hat), Cheese Chester (yellow), Sauerkraut Saul (red) and Oliver Onion (purple).
I recently became friends with another yinzer, aht here in Hawaii, Deanna. My good friend Jon, also a jagoff, planned to be here on vacation over Halloween, too. The idea to be the pierogies for Halloween came out of left field, pun intended! It took 2 days to make them and they turned out FAB! We ate pierogies before going to the Halloween party, of course! Not wearing the costumes, though, that would be cannibalism.
After our first day of costume making:
